anhquandui branding

anhquandui (which means “the man wearing shorts” in English) is a fiction character that was “born” when I was stuck in a bad mood. His very first version was a little hand-drawing illustration on paper. He gradually became my “signature image” although he has inverse traits with me (gender, appearance, the way of dressing, etc.).

anhquandui has some specific traits:

  • always wears shorts – those beautiful ones
  • very big and round knees, elbows, and ankles
  • the eyes always close
  • no mouth & never talks
  • collarbones
  • no hair

Actually, it can be said that andquandui represents my inner personality with secret thoughts and feelings, which I rarely shows to the world. anhquandui never talks, and his facial expression is always the same. However, he tells the stories through his body language, especially his weird poses.

As his name is anhquandui, the man has his own huge collection of shorts. While he always wears all-white tops, his shorts look funny with different patterns and colors. He wears shorts in every circumstance, every time, every where. anhquandui rarely wears the same shorts twice.

I even “upgraded” anhquandui and made it become my personal identity: ANH theDesigner.

The logo was developed with the image of anhquandui. However, as anhquandui is a character representing my inner personality, I do not want to make him too “visible” to the world. At the beginning, I chose to take just a part of anhquandui, which I called “the profile picture” to be my identity. I reduced unimportant details and only kept unique and specific traits like the eyes and collarbones. However, at that stage, my personal identity looks really cold and serious. It seems like I did too much to hide my personality and characters. It made my image unfriendly and boring.

That was the reason why I decided to make it more fun. I still kept the same logo but change a little bit in the way I used it. While my simple logo is on the front of the paper, anhquandui is on the back. When you look at the paper, you will see the image of anhquandui when he is trying to observe the world through a square window. The fun part is at the way he clings to the paper. Different kinds of stationary (business card, CV, letterhead, envelope, etc.) have different images of anhquandui. You can always reassemble two papers in the same kind (one using the front, and the other using the back) to see the full version of anhquandui.
